Currently, there is no known cure for autism:
However, it is possible to aim at improving the social adjustment of autistic people and therefore achieving a significant improvement in their lifestyles.
Well-validated research has brought a definition of what is currently regarded as the more effective therapy:
an integrated pattern of therapy, including
an early diagnosis combined with clear feedback to families
medical and biological investigations and monitoring of medical conditions
education and behavioral treatment with the aim of
developing socialization and communicative skills
achieving the autonomy of the individual
These treatments should be instigated as early as possible, although good results can also be achieved in adult life.
practical and psychological support to families
assistance planned for a whole lifetime (life in a community accommodation, etc.) with a view to
social adaptation
professional training
guidance towards employment (work cooperatives)
coordination between health professionals and relevant services.
There is no specific, effective drug therapy: there are multiple causes of autism.
The main purpose of the drug therapy is that of facilitating behavioral and psycho-educational interventions, thereby reducing dysfunctional symptoms.
