National Association of Parents of Autistic People |
There is no single cause of autism.
Studies on autistic people, still in progress, have highlighted anomalies in brain structure, leading to the conclusion that
autism is caused by damage to normal brain development at an early stage of the fetal development.
Researchers also point to the possibility of
genes
environmental factors (such as viruses or chemicals)
being contributory to the disorder.
